DIRECTIVE: Tabulation of Freestyle, Pair and Team including Drop Penalties

Consistent with the 2011 WBTF rule changes to include drop penalties for the Freestyle, Pair and Team events, that the CBTF adopted at its 2011 Fall Board Meeting, CBTF Competition Directors shall now include a deduction for drop penalties in those events.

At Provincial Team Trial and Canadian Team Trial events, the standard WBTF Tabulation Method shall be used.

At the Canadian Winner/Championships, the standard WBTF Tabulation Method shall be used.

At Open competitions, Competition Directors may elect to offer these events using one of the following methods:

  1. For critique
  2. The standard WBTF Tabulation Method
  3. A CBTF Open Tabulation Method

Critique

In this case, no score or tabulation is performed. As part of the critique, the judge may offer a scoring range from the WBTF Scale, or an Overall Degree of Excellence score that would have been awarded.

WBTF Tabulation Method

Tabulation may be performed manually or using the approved WBTF Tabulation Programs.

If multiple judges are used to count penalties, the average number of drops recorded shall be used.

Individual Freestyle

The Individual Freestyle score is calculated by combining a derived score from Compulsories/Short Program (25%) with a derived score from Freestyle (75%) reduced by the Drop Penalty.

The penalty for each drop is 0.75 per drop.

In this method, the Drop Penalty is deducted from the Freestyle Percentage Score (the 75% score).

If multiple judges are scoring, the same Drop Penalty is deducted from each judges Freestyle Percentage Score.

Pair

The penalty for each drop is 1.00 per drop.

In this method, the Drop Penalty is deducted from the Gross Pair Score (the judges score out of 100).

If multiple judges are scoring, the same Drop Penalty is deducted from each judges Gross Pair Score.

Team

The penalty for each drop is 1.00 per drop.

In this method, the Drop Penalty is deducted from the Gross Team Score (the judges score out of 100).

If multiple judges are scoring, the same Drop Penalty is deducted from each judges Gross Team Score.

CBTF Open Tabulation Method

If multiple judges are used to count penalties, the average number of drops recorded shall be used.

Individual Freestyle

The Individual Freestyle score is calculated by combining the Technical Merit (TM) and Artistic Expression (AE) scores, for a maximum possible score of 20 (the Judges Freestyle Score) reduced by the Freestyle Drop Penalty.

The penalty for each drop is 0.20 per drop.

In this method, the Drop Penalty is deducted from the combined TM+AE score (Judges Freestyle Score).

If multiple judges are scoring, the same Drop Penalty is deducted from each judges Freestyle Score (combined TM+AE).

In this method, the Drop Penalty is deducted from the Gross Pair Score (the judges score out of 100).

If multiple judges are scoring, the same Drop Penalty is deducted from each judges Gross Team Score.

Background

Some underlying principles:

  • The WBTF Drop Penalty is 1% of the total attainable score. Because the total attainable score is different in Freestyle than in Pair/Team, and in the WBTF Method versus the CBTF Open Method, the actual penalty amount is also different.
  • When there are multiple penalty judges (or, when each judge is counting their own drops), the *AVERAGE* number of drops is used.
  • The same WBTF Drop Penalty is always deducted from each judges score.
  • For Freestyle, the WBTF drop penalty is taken off the combined TM+AE score. In the WBTF Tabulation Method, this is done by deducting the Drop Penalty (0.75 per drop) from the Freestyle Percentage Score. In the CBTF Open Tabulation Method, this is done by deducting the Drop Penalty (0.20 per drop) from the Judges Freestyle Score (TM + AE, maximum score = 20.0).

The WBTF and CBTF Open Tabulation Methods do both yield the same result. For a Freestyle example, consider an athlete that receives 5.0 TM and 5.0 AE in a routine with 3 drops...

  1. WBTF Method
    • 5.0 TM + 5.0 AE = 37.5 (Freestyle Percentage Score)
    • Drop penalty = 2.25
    • Net Score = 35.25
  2. CBTF Open Method
    • 5.0 TM + 5.0 AE = 10.0 (Judges Freestyle Score)
    • Drop penalty = 0.6
    • Net Score = 9.4 (out of 20)

To confirm that Method 2 = Method 1, convert the 'Net out of 20' score to a 75% score:

  • 9.4 / 20 = 0.47
  • 0.47 * 75 = 35.25
